Archery Program Restarts with Strong Focus

Some students had never held a bow in their hand, some were skilled hunters, some were basketball players and cheerleaders, and some simply curious about the new sport. Although all were different, all of the Red Bird students had one thing in common and came together for one thing – archery. Archery is a sport that does not discriminate and can be loved by students of all abilities and talents. This inclusivity allows students from different backgrounds to participate, giving students a sense of community and belonging

Red Bird Christian School students in Grades 4-12 were thrilled to start their journey on Thursday as the archery program reopened with its first practice. Red Bird started archery about three years ago, but wasn’t sustained due to lack of leadership. Leading the team for 2024-25 is Danny Kelton Adams, Red Bird’s Certified Archery Coach and Instructor. Supporting Danny are assistant coaches Cody Asher, Troy Brandon Asher, and Kayla Smith who have also participated in NASP (National Archery in Schools Program) training to ensure the safety of the students.

Coach Adams said, "We are incredibly excited to introduce the NASP Archery Program at Red Bird Christian School! This program is designed to provide our students with numerous benefits. Firstly, archery enhances focus and discipline, skills that are crucial not just in sports but in their academic lives as well. Archery promotes physical fitness, helping students improve their strength and coordination. As students learn and master new techniques, they gain a sense of accomplishment that uplifts their self-esteem and builds confidence. Moreover, the program fosters teamwork and sportsmanship, teaching kids to support one another and work collaboratively, even in what seems like an individual sport. Lastly, archery can serve as a great stress reliever, giving students a healthy outlet to channel their energy and emotions.

Overall, the NASP Archery Program aligns perfectly with our commitment to nurturing the whole child, and we can't wait to see the positive impact it will have!"

2+2+1=Rejoicing on Earth and in Heaven

2 powered scooters/chairs located + 2 people needing scooters/chairs + 1 Community Health Worker at Red Bird = Rejoicing on earth and in heaven.

The amputee’s powered scooter was broken beyond repair, and it would be months before he was eligible for replacement assistance. Another amputee was needing a powered chair but couldn’t locate an affordable one.

In another community, a Red Bird partner church had located two powered chairs with the intention to bring them to Red Bird without knowing if anyone needed them right away. They installed new batteries before dropping them off this week. Colleen Sturgill, Red Bird Community Health Coordinator, knew immediately who to call.

God uses His people that are thinking and acting compassionately to help those that desperately need help, and we saw that principle in action this week at Red Bird.

Sharing Creates Opportunity

Sharing is at the core of Red Bird’s mission statement – “Red Bird Mission, guided by Jesus Christ, provides opportunities for individuals to enrich their lives and positively impact others within the mountains of southeastern Kentucky and throughout the world.”

Our programs exist because people share their time and their financial resources for people in need so that those who have received can, in turn, share their time and their financial resources with someone else in need. The evidence can be found in the staff at Red Bird who were students, but are now teachers; who once came to Outreach for food or baby supplies, but are now giving out needed supplies; and who once needed a home repair, but are now repairing homes.

Your gift during the month of November is critical to Red Bird Christian School, Community

Outreach, Community Health and Red Bird Dental Clinic to continue serving thousands living in the mountains. Giving Tuesday follows Thanksgiving each year, and usually falls in the month of November. This year, Giving Tuesday comes on December 3rd, but we invite you to give to Red Bird now in the spirit of Thanksgiving and Giving Tuesday.

All Things New Shares Food and Supplies

Representatives of the All Things New Class at Christ Church United Methodist in Louisville came today to deliver needed food and baby pantry supplies. These partners are stepping in to take responsibility for the food and baby pantry mission that the Pioneer Class in their church started over a decade ago. It’s reassuring that the next generation of partners from Christ Church are engaging at Red Bird so that needs of families are met here at Red Bird. It’s a wonderful example of families helping families!

It’s Roundball Time at Red Bird, Again

For most Kentuckians, any time is basketball time. Elementary basketball season begins in

August for Kentucky. High school practice is now in full swing at Red Bird, but the Middle School boys basketball team traveled to Central Christian Academy in Gray, Kentucky on Tuesday for the third game of the season.

Coach Pino Brock says this season is challenging since his team of mostly 7th Graders find themselves matching up with teams fielding mostly 8th graders. Those 8th graders tend to be a little taller and stronger so the Cardinals play with a lot of “heart”. Coach Brock says he’s already seeing improvement as they move closer to their first win of the season as each game is played.
