Exploring Kentucky's History: Red Bird School Students Visit the State Capitol in Frankfort

A field trip transformed into an exciting educational adventure for 3rd-6th grade students at Red Bird Christian School, as they visited the State Capitol in Frankfort, Kentucky.
This trip was an absolutely perfect opportunity to engage students with the history and governance of their home state. During their day in Frankfort, students toured the old and new capitol buildings and explored the Kentucky Museum.
The Old Capitol Building

The day began with a visit to the historic old capitol building, standing proud since the 1830s! This architectural gem is an important part of Kentucky's early democracy and political history.

The students absolutely loved the reenactment of a state Senate session, where some where chose to take on various roles within the legislative process.
This gave them a fun, hands on learning experience of how laws are made and debated!

As they gazed in awe while exploring the halls, the students discovered historical artifacts and the significant impacts made by influential figures like Henry Clay, who play a role in paving the way for the future of Kentucky!

The Kentucky Museum

The next exciting stop on this adventure was the Kentucky Museum, where students explored the Bluegrass Heritage.

With over 8,000 artifacts inside this museum, imagine stepping back in time to meet ancient Native American tribes and exploring their cultures.

Each decade in Kentucky from the 1800s to 1950 to now was displayed in the museum for the students to experience. From ancient treasures to modern masterpieces, this museum brings history to life in the most exciting way possible!

The students checked out exhibits with local wildlife, historical papers, and the accomplishments of famous Kentuckians like Abe Lincoln, showcasing his famous pocket watch. Interactive displays had students asking questions, curious about their state's resources and historical figures.

New Capitol Building

Finally, the new capitol building was completed in 1910! This modern marvel offered a striking contrast to the old structure.

The architectural beauty of the new capitol also caught their attention. With its striking dome it is a fantastic example of early 20th-century architecture and really shows off the state's pride.
Here, students learned about the inner workings of state government and the legislative process that impacts their daily lives.
