"good hearted people" - Cockpit Close Up - All things new! - "And the good continues" - ARMS

The Friday Finish – August 23, 2024

Thankful to “good hearted people”

Do you ever wonder if the good being done is appreciated? Is it really needed? Over 12,000 people were served by the programs of Red Bird Mission Community Outreach last year and more than 87,000 meals were provided through food boxes, meal delivery and on site. The following note was left in the “impact box“ at Community Outreach.

If it wasn’t for these good hearted people [sic] We would go with out They have opened there [sic] hearts and doors for us and we are so thankful.

Cockpit Close Up for Cadet Aviators

They say the third time’s the charm, and cadets of Red Bird Christian School’s 801st Cadet Civil Air Patrol Squadron were charmed in the cockpit of a Cessna 182 for the first time. Two days for orientation flights had been scrubbed previously due to weather and a high priority mission, but the five cadets making the trip to the London-Corbin Airport last Saturday got plenty of up close aviation instruction.

Civil Air Patrol Lieutenants Bryan Savage and Claudia Rebola opened up their tarmac classroom using their Cessna 182 aircraft to introduce topics to the Red Bird cadets such as fuel systems, control surfaces, prop safety, ground operations, and especially weather conditions. Unfortunately, the cadets didn’t get airborne because weather conditions didn’t meet minimum requirements for orientation flights.

Maj. Kelton Adams who leads the Red Bird squadron said,

While we waited for the weather to clear, the enthusiasm of our cadets never wavered. They've definitely caught the aviation bug. Our cadets had an amazing experience and we are looking forward to the next opportunity to take to the skies.

All things new – including textbooks!

Who doesn’t like a new book? There were lots of smiles in Mrs. Patty Vance’s Social Studies classes at the start of school thanks to church members in Millsboro, Delaware. Third, Fourth and Fifth Grades are especially engaged in social studies this school year because of the new, up-to-date textbooks they’re using.

The Hickory Hill Church in Millsboro committed several years ago to be a Red Bird Christian School Classroom Partner with Ms. Patty. They have sponsored numerous projects over the years to enrich the education of Ms. Patty’s students with this year’s project focused on new textbooks.

“And the good continues”

Red Bird Mission was invited several years ago to participate in the Clay County – Manchester monthly SOAR (Shaping Our Appalachian Region) meetings aimed at creating a stronger economy in the region. Mr. Joshua Ball, currently Chief Operating Officer for SOAR, was leading Clay County meetings when he began using the phrase, “And the good continues,” after each working group report. The idea eventually emerged that a community event to highlight businesses and nonprofit organizations in Clay County would bring positivity and unity among the people.

Tracy Nolan, Community Outreach Director, and Tim Crawford, Development Director, set up a display on Thursday at “The Good Continues” held at the Rawlings & Stinson Park in Manchester. The event is a great family event with kid activities, bouncy houses, local music, food vendors, and freebies that are needed. Red Bird’s display focuses on sharing the services available to residents in southern Clay County and extending the charity of our donors by giving out handmade dresses and school supplies sent from all over the country.

ARMS – A Weapon for Good

ARMS (Association of Retired Ministers and Spouses) met on Wednesday in Lexington, Kentucky for their quarterly gathering and heard an update on Red Bird Mission. Many of these retired servants of God have built support for Red Bird Mission in congregations served over the years and continue to partner through personal support and service. The group definitely leaned into what’s new for Red Bird and the direction being taken to move towards the Red Bird Mission vision of “Building healthy, sustainable communities in the mountains of southeastern Kentucky.”

If you would like to have someone come give an update to a group in your community, contact Tim Crawford, Red Bird Development Director. Don’t hesitate if you live some distance from Red Bird because he might know a Red Bird volunteer speaker in your area, or pair your group with another trip scheduled in your direction.
