Red Bird Spared Major Storm Damage
The effects of Helene on the Carolinas, East Tennessee and Georgia have been heartbreaking for all of the nation. The wind and rain that came through eastern Kentucky left thousands without power, and trees blocked roads making travel treacherous at the beginning of the weekend. Red Bird Mission was fortunate that no damage was sustained, and staff were able to keep generators working until power was restored Saturday and Sunday so that there was no loss of food.
Naturally, our people are praying and giving to help our neighboring states. Big Creek Mission, a neighboring mission adjacent to our service area, was collecting emergency supplies for delivery to one Georgia community on Tuesday.
Christmas Packing Starts
Christmas Assistance sign-ups at Red Bird Mission Community Outreach closed on Monday. Applications have been accepted for 210 children living in 112 households.
Judy and Carolyn were already busy Tuesday packing the first 150 applications passed along. Judy started coming many years ago to help her Aunt Joyce pack. Judy’s daughter, Carolyn, is now retired and taking her place representing the third generation of this Michigan family serving the children of the Red Bird area.
As packing starts, Judy and Carolyn, said that the Christmas rooms located in the old Red Bird Hospital surgery suite appear pretty well stocked. But, they already have seen that they’ll need to shop for clothes for toddler boys and games and jeans for all the age ranges over the next week. Thankfully, Red Bird supporters have sent donations that are held in restriction as well as gift cards kept in the Finance Department safe to be used to complete what’s needed for each child’s Christmas box.
“Littles” Learn About Bones and Milk
The nursing students from Berea College were prepped to do health screenings at Red Bird Christian School Thursday morning, but one “student” didn’t tip the scales very far. A pre-school boy wasn’t sure he wanted to cooperate with being weighed and measured and reading eye charts, but his Bluey toy “stepped” on the scales first to let him know he could do it, too!
The partnership with Berea College Department of Nursing will continue this fall with two different groups of students doing more screenings, a health fair and other health education events. The Red Bird communities benefit greatly from the health professional groups that volunteer time and travel to bridge the gap with special health outreach.
Contact Colleen Sturgill, Community Health Coordinator, or Tracy Nolan, Community Outreach Director if you’re interested in volunteering or providing support for health outreach events.
Seven Days Until Alumni Homecoming!
Support the Homecoming Challenge
Alumni will be gathering next Saturday to catch up with one another and celebrate their years at Red Bird School. There will be a special celebration and recognition for the Class of 1984, the first class to graduate from the "new" building. Alumni have been raising money and donating to sustain the school so that 40 years from now the Class of 2024 will hit that 40 year mark.
Please make your gift to join the alumni and friends that are giving to provide opportunities for today's Red Bird Christian School students!
